WHEN I MET MR. JACK KILBY,
THE AMAZING INVENTOR

Mr. Jack Kilby is rightfully and often compared to Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, The Wright Brothers, and Henry Ford.  Some say he stands alone as the greatest inventor of all times because he made the digital information age possible, the cell phone, the personal computer, space travel and just about everything out there as it probably has his invention in it by now.

When I met Mr. Jack Kilby, it was obvious that Mr. Kilby had resisted change and preferred a simpler modest life even though his inventions had dramatically changed our world.  Mr. Kilby used land phones and did not own a cell phone.  He helped invent the pocket calculator yet preferred to use a slide rule.  It seems he was sentimental and had saved his and his wife’s possessions for decades, including clothes, his wife’s art, photography, generations of books and much more. He seemed to have kept everything...and it all has a story.

Since we met, his spirit and inspiration will be with me and the world forever and now I own cherished fragments of his life including the blue cup that was his personal cup.

I love to shop thrift stores even when I travel. Thrift store shopping is even more popular now with the down economy and is great for back to school.  It’s a wise way to save money and find bargains but they are also fun places to find treasures.
